On June 12, SM Malls in Bulacan renews its tradition of commemorating the 118th years of Philippine Independence with unique centerpieces, special freedom ceremonies, and festive gatherings.
Giving tribute to the country’s rich heritage and tradition, the newly opened SM City San Jose Del Monte featured a giant Borlas De Pastillas Filipiniaña Gown inspired by the art of wrapping pastillas in intricately designed papel de hapon. The 8 feet centerpiece was in honor of the iconic food artisan and the legendary pabalat maker of Bulacan, Luz Villaseñor Mendoza-Ocampo or better known as Nanay Luz. This was complemented by the origami inspired clothing exhibit, dramatic paintings from the Artist Guild of San Jose Del Monte and Pinoy Hugot Wall laden with witty statements on patriotism and love for the country.
SM City Baliwag, on the other hand, showed its unity, creativity and identity through its people creating a diorama. In partnership with Scotch, Post It and 3M Philippines, mall goers will have a rare glimpse of the 24 feet Philippine Map Diorama located at the Mall Atrium. The centerpiece, which was made up of thousands of post-it notes, was artistically crafted by the mall’s employees and security personnel as well as students and girl scouts in Baliwag including SM little stars candidates and winners. Special paper folding techniques were likewise carried out to different Bora Bora Collection Post- it notes to fill the message board and form a unique representation of the Philippine Islands.
At SM City Marilao, the two- meter panel tile mosaic mural graces the front of the mall. Using recycled materials, the pieces of old tiles were glued to a Masonite panel to create image of the Philippine Land Mass. The mural include legend of the first provinces in the Philippines that declare war against Spanish oppression.
Apart from the simultaneous flag raising ceremony on Sunday, various activities and presentations are also lined-up to add festivity. Students and active members of various civic groups in SM City Baliwag will serenade shoppers with renditions of classical Filipino songs. Shoppers will likewise relive cultural tradition in SM City San Jose Del Monte with the pastillas wrapper making demonstration and live painting session by the Artist Guild of San Jose Del Monte. While homegrown artist Alliyah Cadelina will belt out best of OPM songs as grand fireworks display will cap off the event celebration in SM City Marilao.
The exhibit in SM City San Jose Del Monte will likewise be complemented by a Filipiniaña Fashion Show, festive cultural dances of FCPC Baliktanaw dance troupe and vibrant musical entertainment by Banda Kawayan.
